What MOTS-c is

MOTS-c (Mitochondrial ORF of the twelve S rRNA type-c) is a short peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome — one of a small class of mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs). Unlike most peptides, which are encoded in nuclear DNA, MOTS-c originates from a mitochondrial gene, which is part of why it draws interest in cellular-energy research.
